BOISE, Idaho (AP) - The travel plan for a wilderness study area on the Idaho and Montana border is being challenged in court.
The Idaho Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/RCqcci ) that the lawsuit was filed by the Blue Ribbon Coalition and the Idaho Snowmobile Association. It takes on the Clearwater National Forest's decision to ban motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles and mountain bikes in the Great Burn wilderness study area.
The groups argue that only Congress can designate wilderness areas. They argue the Forest Service is wrongly attempting to manage the area as wilderness without formal declaration.
Environmentalists argue the wilderness character needs to be preserved so that it can one day be declared a formal wilderness area.
The Wilderness Society says it expects to join the legal battle over the travel plan.
