Pentagon: Army, Marines to shrink as budget slows (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Pentagon outlined a plan Thursday for slowing the growth of military spending, including cutting the size of the Army and Marine Corps, retiring older planes and trimming war costs. It drew quick criticism from Republicans, signaling the difficulty of scaling back defense budgets in an election year.

The changes Defense Secretary Leon Panetta described at a news conference are numerous but hardly dramatic. They aim to save money by delaying some big-ticket weapons like a next-generation nuclear-armed submarine, but the basic shape and structure of the military remains the same.

The Army would shrink from a peak of 570,000 to 490,000 within five years, and the Marines would drop by 20,000, to 182,000. Those are considerable declines, but both services will still be slightly larger than on 9/11, before they began a decade of war. Both will keep their footholds abroad, although the Army will decrease its presence in Europe and the Marines plan to increase theirs in Asia.

Panetta said the administration will ask Congress for $525 billion to run the Pentagon in 2013 ? $6 billion less than the current budget. War costs, which are not considered part of the base budget, would decline from $115 billion to $88 billion, reflecting the completion of the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.

The base budget would then increase in each year of the Pentagon's five-year plan, reaching $567 billion in 2017. A year ago the Pentagon had projected 2017 spending to reach $622 billion. The Pentagon counts those reductions in projected future spending as "defense savings."

When Obama took office in January 2009 the Pentagon's base budget was $513 billion. In 2001 it was $297 billion.

Under a budget deficit-cutting deal Congress made last summer, the Pentagon is committed to reducing projected spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years. The plan Panetta presented Thursday covers the first five years of that span and would cut a cumulative total of $259 billion in planned spending.

"We believe this is a balanced and complete package," Panetta said.

In a bid to pre-empt election-year Republican criticism, Panetta said the plan begins to shift the Pentagon's focus from the long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to future challenges in Asia, the Mideast and in cyberspace. More special operations forces like the Navy SEALs who killed Osama bin Laden will be available around the world, he said, and the Pentagon will stress improvements in cyberdefenses.

Republicans were quick to pounce on the proposed Army and Marine Corps reductions.

"These cuts reflect President Obama's vision of an America that is weakened, not strengthened, by our men and women in uniform," said Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.

McKeon voted for the bill last August that established the requirement for $487 billion in defense savings over five years.

"Taking us back to a pre-9/11 military force structure places our country in grave danger," said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee that will hold hearings on the Pentagon budget plan.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said the Panetta plan "ignores the lessons of history." He said it provides for a military that is "too small to respond effectively to events that may unfold over the next few years."

The military's top general, however, defended the administration's approach. Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he is convinced that the risks raised by cutting the size of the military are manageable. He said failing to make these changes would have meant even bigger risks.

"This budget is a first step ? it's a down payment ? as we transition from an emphasis on today's wars to preparing for future challenges," he said, adding, "This budget does not lead to a military in decline."

Among other details Panetta disclosed:

--The Air Force would retire some older planes including about two dozen C-5A cargo aircraft and 65 of its oldest C-130 cargo planes.

-- The Navy would keep a fleet of 11 aircraft carriers but retire seven cruisers earlier than planned. It also would delay purchase of some other ships, including a new Virginia-class submarine.

--Purchase of F-35 stealth fighter jets, to be fielded by the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, would be slowed.

--Current plans for building a new generation of submarines that carry long-range nuclear missiles would be delayed by two years. The current fleet of nuclear-capable bombers and land-based nuclear missiles would be left unchanged.

--Military pay raises will remain on track until 2015, when the pace of increase will be slowed by an undetermined amount.

--Obama will ask Congress to approve a new round of domestic base closures, although the timing of this was left vague and there is little chance that lawmakers would agree to this in a presidential election year.

The defense spending plan is scheduled to be submitted to Congress as part of the administration's full 2013 budget on Feb. 13.

The defense budget is being reshaped in the midst of a presidential contest in which Obama seeks to portray himself as a forward-looking commander in chief focusing on new security threats. Republicans want to cast him as weak on defense.

Obama has highlighted his national security successes ? the killing of bin Laden, the death of other senior al-Qaida leaders and the demise of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi ? to counter Republican criticism. He also has emphasized the completion of the U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq and the start of a drawdown in Afghanistan as turning points that offer new opportunities to scale back defense spending.

But several congressional Republicans see a political opening in challenging the reductions in projected military spending that the GOP and Obama agreed to last summer as part of a deal to raise the nation's borrowing authority. They've echoed Obama's potential presidential rivals Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, who plead for fiscal austerity but contend that sizable cuts would gut the military.

'Speed gene' in modern racehorses originated from British mare 300 years ago, scientists claim

ScienceDaily (Jan. 24, 2012) ? Scientists have traced the origin of the 'speed gene' in Thoroughbred racehorses back to a single British mare that lived in the United Kingdom around 300 years ago, according to findings published today in the scientific journal Nature Communications.

The origin of the 'speed gene' (C type myostatin gene variant) was revealed by analysing DNA from hundreds of horses, including DNA extracted from the skeletal remains of 12 celebrated Thoroughbred stallions born between 1764 and 1930.

"Changes in racing since the foundation of the Thoroughbred have shaped the distribution of 'speed gene' types over time and in different racing regions," explained Dr Emmeline Hill, the senior author of the study, and a genomics scientist at the School of Agriculture and Food Science, University College Dublin.

"But we have been able to identify that the original 'speed gene' variant entered the Thoroughbred from a single founder, which was most likely a British mare about 300 years ago, when local British horse types were the preeminent racing horses, prior to the formal foundation of the Thoroughbred racehorse."

The international scientific team led by scientists from University College Dublin (UCD), Equinome Ltd and the University of Cambridge, have traced all modern variants of the original 'speed gene' to the legendary Nearctic (1954-1973), and attribute the wider expansion of these variants to Northern Dancer (1961-1990),the son of Nearctic, and one of the most influential stallions of modern times.

"Having first identified the 'speed gene' in 2010, we decided to see if we could trace the origin of the gene variant using population genetics coupled with pedigree analysis. We wanted to understand where speed in the Thoroughbred came from.," said Dr Hill.

Dr Hill is also a co-founder of Equinome, a UCD spin-out company headquartered at NovaUCD, which has developed The Equinome Speed Gene Test. This test is currently being used by the global bloodstock and racing industry to identify the optimum racing distance for individual Thoroughbred horses.

"We traced the economically valuable gene variant by determining 'speed gene' type in almost 600 horses from 22 Eurasian and North American horse breeds, museum bone and tooth specimens from 12 legendary Thoroughbred stallions, 330 elite performing modern Thoroughbreds from 3 continents, 40 donkeys and two zebras.," added Dr Hill.

According to co-author Dr Mim Bower from the University of Cambridge, UK, "The findings point to a British mare as the most likely single founder of the original 'speed gene' because one of the lines of evidence from the research demonstrated that the prize stallions of the 17th and 18th centuries had two copies of the T type speed gene variant (T:T) which is linked to greater stamina."

"At this time in the history of horse racing, races were between two horses competed over multiple heats, at distances of between two to four miles, and repeated until a horse had won the event twice or 'distanced' the opponent. Horses did not race until they were five or six years old, and then only two or three times in their lives. This is consistent with these horses being T:T types.," said Dr Bower

An increased premium on speed and precocity developed as two-year-old races became popular during the last century, and in many regions of the world, these preferences remain to this day.

Dr Hill explained, "For example, in Australia, the myostatin 'speed gene' type (C:C), which is best suited to fast, short-distance, sprint races, is more common and there is a market driven demand for horses with at least one copy of the C type gene variant."

"This just goes to show the power breeders have to shape the genetic make-up of their horses. Decisions regarding the race pattern in each racing jurisdiction and the commercial demand for certain types will also rapidly influence the genetic make-up of the population."

To identify where the C type gene variant originated, the researchers analysed DNA samples from more than 20 horse breeds that included representatives of local British and Irish horses, from where female Thoroughbred lineages derive, and exotic eastern populations from where male Thoroughbred lineages derive.

The study identified the Shetland breed as having the highest frequency of the C type gene variant. The Shetland represents local British horse types, which were the preeminent racing horses prior to the formal foundation of the Thoroughbred.

By comparing the diversity of the chromosomes around the C and T type gene variants researchers found only a single C type compared to 11 different T type gene variants, meaning that the 'speed gene' entered the Thoroughbred just once.

"The results show that the 'speed gene' entered the Thoroughbred from a single founder, which was most likely a British mare about 300 years ago when local British horse types were the preeminent racing horses, prior to the formal foundation of the Thoroughbred racehorse.," said Dr Hill.

Collaborators in the study were scientists from Trinity College Dublin, the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The research was supported by grants from The Horserace Betting Levy Board, Leverhulme Trust, Cambridge Overseas Trust and Science Foundation Ireland.

Rihanna and Chris Brown: Clubbing Together?!

Fueling rumors that they are getting back together, or at least hooking up with each other again, Rihanna and Chris Brown partied at the same club last night.

The two singers, who have been the subject of so much speculation lately, left Greystone Manor, a West Hollywood club, in separate cars, around the same time.

It's unclear if they came together or headed to the same place after, but Rihanna and Chris Brown were ... there at the same time. Make of that what you will.

Rihanna Bikini PhotographChris Brown Grabs Crotch

Again, we emphasize that several people who were at the club Tweeted that as far as they could see, Rihanna and Chris were there with separate groups.

The protective order, which required that the Grammy nominees have no contact with each other after Brown beat Rihanna in 2009, was lifted a year ago.

They've also exchanged not-so-subtle Tweets lately, so wouldn't be at all scandalous, let alone illegal if they were there together. Let the gossip continue ...

Should Rihanna and Chris Brown get back together?

UPDATE: According to Chris' rep, the singer was only interested in one girl at the club... and that was Karrueche Tran. Brown's girlfriend. So there's that.

Greece names and shames alleged top tax evaders

(AP) ? Debt-crippled Greece has named some 4,000 alleged tax dodgers, including a former media magnate and a prominent entertainer, with the worst offender owing the state nearly euro1 billion ($1.3 billion).

But much of that money might never be reclaimed, as some of the top offenders are in prison or their companies are bankrupt.

The list published by the Finance Ministry late Sunday is part of a campaign to crack down on rampant tax evasion, which ? coupled with inefficient tax collection ? is hampering the recession-hit eurozone member's painful efforts to avoid bankruptcy.

At the top of the list was a 58-year-old accountant, currently serving terms of more than 100 years in prison for tax fraud, who allegedly owes some euro950 million. Most of that sum, however, is in surcharges and fines.

At least another three people convicted over the same scam figure high on the list, which includes debts of more than euro170,000 ($221,000).

But ministry officials acknowledged that it would be extremely hard to collect many of the outstanding debts ? which total nearly euro15 billion ($19.5 billion).

"The truth is that these lists contain debtors who in some cases have owed the money for a long period of time, so after a certain point one does not expect to be able to collect the debts," finance ministry official Haris Theocharis said Monday.

"But I'm sure that there are possibilities ... In some cases (publication) will push debtors to settle their debts, and tax offices to redouble their efforts," Theocharis, who is head of the ministry's general secretariat of information systems that compiled the list, told the Associated Press.

Theocharis argued that the list could also dispel popular misconceptions on the recovery prospects for such debts.

"When more than a year ago the finance minister of the day tried to table legislation to cancel some of these debts that were considered impossible to reclaim, there was a public outcry," he said.

"People say, 'oh there's euro41 billion in outstanding (tax) debts, and if we reclaim that sum then we won't have any problems,'" he said. "This kind of talk has no meaning."

Despite repeated pledges over the past two years, Greek officials have failed to make progress in collecting outstanding debts, which the European Commission task force for Greece calculates at about euro60 billion ($78 billion) ? little more than a tenth of which is seen as collectible.

The country's annual gross domestic product is about euro218 billion, while the 2011 budget deficit is expected to be around euro19.7 billion.

The government has acknowledged the grave shortcomings of its tax service, even admitting that a hugely unpopular new property tax under which nonpaying households will have their electricity cut off might not have been imposed if the tax collection system were more efficient.

Missouri Meth Problem Causes House GOP to Consider Stricter Drug Sales (ContributorNetwork)

Missouri already has a law on the books that requires purchases of over-the-counter cold medications to be monitored by scanning someone's driver's license. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Republicans in the Missouri House of Representatives have introduced a bill reducing the amount of pseudoephedrine consumers in Missouri can purchase per month and per year.

Here's a look at why the General Assembly is considering the legislation this year, based upon what Missouri's meth problem did in 2011.

Sheriff Busted for Dealing Meth

The New York Daily News reported in April that Tommy Adams was the sheriff of Carter County, a rural part of south central Missouri. He was arrested after two years on the job for trafficking meth.

Adams allegedly gave an informant the drug and then used it himself. He ran for sheriff in 2008 and won by a single vote when his Democratic opponent committed suicide two weeks before the election. Missouri officials became suspicious when meth raids fell dramatically in Adams' county, even though there has been a huge meth problem there in the past.

St. Charles County Requires Prescription

St. Charles County took matters into their own hands. Just west of St. Louis, St. Charles County required anyone within its borders to get a prescription for drugs containing pseudoephedrine beginning Aug. 30. The Columbia Missourian reported in late October that sales of the drugs increased in St. Louis County when the law went into effect.

Towns such as Bridgeton, Chesterfield and Maryland Heights all saw spikes in psuedoephedrine sales in September. That spike was attributed to citizens going to the next county over to get cold medication.

Meth Labs Top 2,100

Although official statistics have yet to be released, the Springfield News-Leader reports that meth lab busts in Missouri are expected to top 2,100 for 2011. That figure would push Missouri back into the number one state for meth production. Last year, the Show-Me State was second to Kentucky in meth busts after years of being in the top spot.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol will be looking to increase restrictions on ingredients for meth. This move comes even though drug companies are claiming cold medications will be taken away from law abiding citizens who simply want to get relief from cold and flu season.

Jefferson County's Situation

USA Today reports Jefferson County, just south of St. Louis, leads Missouri's meth lab busts. Through Nov. 28, that particular area of Missouri had 234 meth lab seizures of the official 1,744 busts across the state. That turns out to be over 13 percent of the statewide meth problem in just one county.

If the General Assembly passes the new bill introduced in the current session, new limits will be in place for the sale of pseudeoephedrine. Monthly limits in place now restrict consumers to purchasing nine grams of the drug per month and 108 grams per year. The new limits, if passed, would lower the monthly limit to 7.5 grams and the annual limit would be 75 grams. A measure last year to require a prescription state-wide passed the House but failed in the Missouri Senate.

3 shark attacks in Australia in less than 3 weeks (AP)

SYDNEY ? A 10-foot (3-meter) tiger shark has attacked a swimmer off a remote beach in Australia's third attack this month. That's as many attacks as the country generally sees in an entire year.

Western Australia Police Sgt. Gerry Cassidy says the man was swimming in a lagoon at Western Australia's Coral Bay on Thursday when the shark bit the man's arm. The attack left the swimmer with severe lacerations.

Royal Flying Doctor Service spokeswoman Joanne Hill says a doctor was assessing the 26-year-old man, but his injuries were not life-threatening and he was in a stable condition.

The attack comes one day after a surfer was bitten by a shark at a beach off Australia's east coast. Another surfer was attacked at a beach north of Sydney on Jan. 3.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Paula Deen, the Southern belle of butter and heavy cream, makes no apologies for waiting three years to disclose she has diabetes while continuing to dish up deep-fried cheesecake and other high-calorie, high-fat recipes on TV.

She said she isn't changing the comfort cooking that made her a star, though it isn't clear how much of it she'll continue to eat while she promotes health-conscious recipes along with a diabetes drug she's endorsing for a Danish company.

"I've always said, 'Practice moderation, y'all.' I'll probably say that a little louder now," Deen said Tuesday after revealing her diagnosis on NBC's "Today" show. "You can have diabetes and have a piece of cake. You cannot have diabetes and eat a whole cake."

Health activists and one fellow chef called her a hypocrite for promoting an unhealthy diet along with a drug to treat its likely effects. Deen added her support of the Novo Nordisk company to a collection of lucrative endorsements that include Smithfield ham and Philadelphia Cream Cheese.

Deen, who will turn 65 on Thursday, said she kept her diagnosis private as she and her family figured out what to do, presumably about her health and a career built solidly on Southern cooking. Among her recipes: deep-fried cheesecake covered in chocolate and powdered sugar, and a quiche that calls for a pound of bacon.

"I really sat on this information for a few years because I said, 'Oh, my gosh, what am I going to do about this? Is my life fixing to change? Am I no longer going to like my life?" she asked. "I had to have time to adjust and soak it all in and get up all the information that I could."

While Deen, who lives in Savannah, Ga., has cut out the sweet tea she routinely drank straight through to bedtime and taken up treadmill walking, she plans few changes on the air.

Government doctors say that being overweight (as Deen is), over 45 (as Deen is) and inactive (as Deen was) increase the risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Growth of the disease in the U.S. has been closely tied to escalating obesity rates. Roughly 23 million Americans are believed to have the most common Type 2 diabetes; patients' bodies either do not produce enough insulin or do not use it efficiently, allowing excess sugar, or glucose, to accumulate in the blood.

Deen is the pitch person for Novo Nordisk's new online program, Diabetes in a New Light, which offers tips on food preparation, stress management and working with doctors on treatment. She has contributed diabetes-friendly recipes to the website and takes the company's drug Victoza, a once-daily noninsulin injection that had global sales of $734 million in the first nine months of 2011.

A recipe for Lady and Sons Lasagna, on her diabetes-conscious site, uses extra-lean ground beef and cans of unsalted tomato sauce and diced tomatoes, for a dish estimated at 260 calories a serving. Turn to Deen's collection of recipes on The Food Network's site and find Grandmother Paul's fried chicken, with Crisco shortening for frying, or baked French Toast casserole, with two cups of half-and-half and a half-pound of butter. No calorie counts are estimated.

The Novo Nordisk site links to promotional materials for the drug Victoza. Company spokeswoman Ambre Morley and Deen declined to disclose how much she is being paid.

Deen said she had no help or advice to offer the public when she was first diagnosed, but feels she's making a contribution now.

None of that matters much to outspoken chef Anthony Bourdain, who has never been a Deen fan. He told Eater.com of her diabetes announcement: "When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you've been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you've got Type 2 diabetes ... it's in bad taste if nothing else."

In Yuba, Wis., Judd Dvorak watches Deen cook on TV all the time with his wife. He thinks Bourdain has the right idea. Dvorak said it's wrong for Deen to accept money to become a paid spokeswoman for a diabetes drug after espousing a cooking style that helps lead to diabetes.

"It would be like someone who goes on TV and brags about how wonderful it is to smoke two packs of cigarettes a day and then when he or she gets lung cancer becomes a paid spokesperson for nicotine patches," Dvorak said. "I feel it is in very poor taste and if she chose to become an unpaid spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association, that would be a better way for her to make a difference and help fight this horrible disease."

Deen also smokes, but she considers her heavy-handed food only one piece of the diabetes puzzle, with genetics, lifestyle, stress, age and race. She said she would never advocate smoking and her diabetes is "well under control."

While making changes in her personal life, she doesn't think her TV shows ? there are three ? will look much different. She spends about 30 days a year taping, "so I'm not cooking and eating that way every day."

That's something the public doesn't necessarily know. The food, Deen said, isn't really to blame.

"I am who I am," she said. "I think the South gets a bad rap sometimes, saying our food is very unhealthy, but frankly I don't think that's the case. I think it's like any other food, whether it be Italian, French, Cajun. They all can be very high in calories and that's where we have to practice portion control and moderation."

Morley said the company didn't know Deen had diabetes when it approached her about promoting the new health initiative.

"We really just wanted to ask her, 'Hey, Paula, do you think we could challenge you to change up some of your recipes and make them diabetes-friendly," Morley said. "And her reply was, 'How did you guys know I had diabetes?'"

It was a surprise to the Food Network as well. Network officials found out only last week, said spokesman Jesse Derris.

"As part of the Food Network's family, our only concern is for Paula's health. We will continue to support her as she confronts this new challenge, taking her lead on what future episodes will offer her fans," he said.

Some health experts question the delay between the time Deen was diagnosed with diabetes and her move three years later to promote a healthier way of cooking and living.

"A more responsible approach would have been that once she was diagnosed with diabetes to really emphasize to her viewers the importance of eating a healthy diet," said Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) ? Jon Huntsman staked his presidential campaign on New Hampshire and his bid to become a legitimate competitor on distinguishing himself from front-runner Mitt Romney. But less than a week after a disappointing third-place finish in the GOP primary there, Huntsman decided to quit the race and back Romney.

Huntsman will endorse Romney, officials said Sunday, because he thinks Romney is the best candidate to beat President Barack Obama in November. Campaign manager Matt David said Huntsman will announce his withdrawal at an event in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Huntsman's resume had suggested he could be a major contender for the Republican presidential nomination: businessman, diplomat, governor, veteran of four presidential administrations, an expert on China and foreign trade. But the former ambassador to China in the Obama administration found a poor reception for his brand of moderate civility that he had hoped would draw support from independents, as well as party moderates.

Huntsman was almost invisible in a race often dominated by Romney, a fellow Mormon. One reason was timing. For months, Romney and other declared or expected-to-declare candidates drew media attention and wooed voters in early primary states.

Huntsman, however, was half a world away, serving as ambassador to China until he resigned in late April. Nearly two more months would pass before his kickoff speech on June 22 in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty. The former Utah governor had already acknowledged that expectations for him in South Carolina's primary this week will be "very low." Word of the Huntsman withdrawal came on the same day that The State, South Carolina's largest newspaper, endorsed him for president.

Although Huntsman was viewed as having little chance of finishing strong in South Carolina, his endorsement of Romney could give the former Massachusetts governor, who leads in state polls, even more of the look of inevitability.

The move comes as pressure has been increasing on Texas Gov. Rick Perry to leave the race to allow South Carolina's influential social conservatives to unify behind either former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum or former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Santorum worked over the weekend at consolidating conservatives, trying to parlay into support in South Carolina the decision Saturday by an influential group of national Christian conservatives to back him.

"I think it's important that we eventually consolidate this race," Santorum told reporters Monday at a news conference in Columbia. He stopped short of urging Perry, who has shown little traction in South Carolina, to quit the race.

"That's up to the candidates themselves to decide," Santorum said.

To stand out in a crowded field, Huntsman positioned himself as a tax-cutting, budget-balancing chief executive and former business executive who could rise above partisan politics. That would prove to be a hard sell to the conservatives dominating the early voting contests, especially in an election cycle marked by bitter divisions between Republicans and Democrats and a boiling antipathy for Obama.

Huntsman also tried to offer a different tenor, promising a campaign marked by civility.

"I don't think you need to run down somebody's reputation in order to run for the office of president," he said.

While Huntsman was often critical of his former boss ? he joined those saying Obama had failed as a leader ? and occasionally jabbed at Romney, he spent more of his time in debates pushing his own views for improving the economy rather than thumping the president or his opponents.

In light of his work in the Obama administration, Republicans seemed wary of Huntsman. While he cast his appointment in August 2009 as U.S. ambassador to China as answering the call to serve his country, his critics grumbled that he had in fact been working on behalf of the opposition.

Huntsman was conservative in matters of taxes and the reach of the federal government, but he was out of step with most conservatives in his support of civil unions for gay couples. On matters of science, he poked fun at his skeptical rivals in a pre-debate tweet: "To be clear. I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy."

In the end, Huntsman didn't seem to register, crazy or otherwise, with Republicans looking for an alternative to Romney or a winner against Obama. He was routinely at the bottom of national polls, barely registering at 1 or 2 percent, a reflection of the faint impression he made in the GOP debates.

His campaign put all its emphasis on the New Hampshire primary, hoping that face-to-face politicking in the first-in-the-nation primary would pay off with a strong second-place finish or a surprise victory in Romney's backyard. While other GOP candidates spent December in Iowa, the Huntsman campaign ignored its leadoff caucuses, where social conservatives were all but certain to give him short shrift.

Central to Huntsman's New Hampshire strategy was its open Republican primary, which allowed independents to vote along with declared party members. He gambled that he could attract moderate voters, Republicans and independents alike, by presenting himself as a successful conservative leader who wasn't interested in engaging in a culture war.

He called his third-place showing a "ticket to ride" to South Carolina, but his distant finish behind Romney and runner-up Ron Paul was widely regarded as lackluster.

Huntsman, 51, was born in Redwood City, Calif., and raised in Utah. His father, an industrialist and at one time a Nixon administration official, founded Huntsman Chemical Corp. in 1982. Now the Huntsman Corp., it reported revenues of more than $9 billion in 2010.

The younger Huntsman drifted a bit as a young man. He attended high school in Salt Lake City but dropped out to play keyboards in a band. He later attended the University of Utah, then dropped out to serve two years as a Mormon missionary in Taiwan, where he learned to speak Mandarin.

He returned to the University of Utah in 1981 and later worked as an intern for Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and as a staff assistant to President Ronald Reagan. He left college to join the Huntsman Corp. in 1983, the same year he married Mary Kaye Cooper. He studied international politics at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a bachelor's degree in 1987.

While he served in the administrations of both George H.W. Bush ? he was ambassador to Singapore in 1992 ? and George W. Bush, Huntsman first won elective office in 2004 as Utah's governor. He was re-elected by a 3-1 margin in 2008, then resigned the following year to be America's top diplomat in China.

Huntsman and his wife have seven children, including one adopted from India and one adopted from China.

The CES news is coming out fast and furious, with ASUS revealing plans to release a Windows 8 ARM tablet in 2012, with what TPCR believes could be a possible launch at CES. In addition, ASUS will show off a new 7-inch tablet, possibly the?glasses-free 3D MeMO, and a 10-inch tablet with a high resolution screen, both likely running Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Rounding out the new ASUS CES tablets will be a 3G Transformer Prime with improved GPS performance.

The news comes out of Taipei, from a pre-CES presentation in which ASUS Eee division head Samon Hu outlined the ASUS 2012 tablet product roadmap. Rumors and rumblings that ASUS would release a Windows 8 ARM tablet and 7-inch tablet circulated earlier this year. TabletPCReview will be in Vegas, and the team will certainly visit with ASUS to get the scoop, and hopefully catch at least a glimpse of the Windows 8 ARM tablet.

But what about the other ASUS products rumored for CES? The Padfone tablet with docking smartphone combo was announced at Computex in September, but hasn?t been seen since. A CES re-introduction might be in order. Finally, Hu mentioned two additional 10-inch tablets slotted for release in 2012, but no further details were provided.

New study reveals possible opportunities to repurpose drugs for thyroid cancer treatment

Drugs already approved for clinical use across a variety of therapeutic categories can be screened to identify effective agents for thyroid cancer according to a recent study accepted for publication in the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM). These findings could rapidly be implemented into a clinical trial to test how effective the treatment would be.

The discovery of new chemical agents capable of modulating a disease is a long and expensive process. An alternative approach that is just beginning to be explored is the potential repurposing of already established drugs which have been approved for clinical use. The current study examined the newly assembled National Institutes of Health (NIH) Chemical Genomic Center's pharmaceutical collection, which contains 2,816 approved drugs and bioactive compounds and sought to identify agents with an anti-cancer effect in thyroid cancer cell lines.

"To our knowledge, this is the first study to use such a large collection of clinical drugs to test anti-proliferative effect in cancer cells," said Electron Kebebew, MD, of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD and lead author of the study. "The compounds found to have potent activity in our screen represent possible opportunities to repurpose these drugs for the treatment of patients with aggressive recurrent or metastatic thyroid cancer."

In this study, researchers used a quantitative high-throughput screening (qHTS) approach to examine the effect of 2,816 clinically approved drugs on thyroid cancer cells. qHTS is a titration-based screening paradigm where compounds are screened at multiple concentrations. By employing this approach, researchers found numerous agents across different therapeutic categories and mode of action that had an anti-cancer effect.

"Clinicians can more readily translate these findings into therapy when the drug characteristics are well-known. The drugs can then be used in developing clinical trials or in some cases for off-label use," said Kebebew. "Furthermore, qHTS could be used for identifying therapeutics not only for cancer, but for many other diseases."

###

Other researchers working on the study include Lisa Zhang, Mei He and Naris Nilubol of the National Cancer Institute and Yaqin Zhang and Min Shen of the National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, MD.

The article, "Quantitative high-throughput drug screening identifies novel classes of drugs with anticancer activity in thyroid cancer cells: Opportunities for repurposing," appears in the March 2012 issue of JCEM.

Ron Paul Declares Himself One of Three Winners in Iowa Caucus

If Ron Paul was disappointed in last night's Iowa caucus results, it didn't show.

The Republican Congressman from Texas finished a strong third behind Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, but certainly served notice that he's a factor in 2012.

Paul wanted some legitimacy and a bigger platform for his movement, and by securing over 20 percent in the first-in-the-nation caucuses, he's on his way.

On stage before a cheering crowd Tuesday, Paul said winning elections is the best way to promote a cause, and that he was one of three winners last night:

Claiming a ticket out of Iowa, Paul vowed to continue his fight, even as GOP rivals such as Newt Gingrich, Romney and Santorum dismiss him as unelectable.

Iowa voters thought otherwise, taking to Paul’s small-government, anti-war and pro-civil liberties message in enough numbers to lift him into the top tier.

Evangelicals, home schoolers, young people, moderates, libertarians and disaffected Democrats formed an unlikely coalition that led to his strong showing.

Can it be replicated or improved upon elsewhere? That's the key question.

“We have tremendous opportunity," Paul said. "It won’t be long that there’s going to be an election up in New Hampshire, and believe me, this momentum is going to continue, this movement is going to continue and we are going to keep scoring.”

With a huge smile at the end, he continued, “So tonight, we have come out of an election where there were essentially three winners, three top vote-getters."

"We will go on, we will raise the money, I have no doubt about the volunteers.”

Indeed, Paul's fundraising and organization make him formidable almost anywhere. As the field narrows (Michele Bachmann is already out), can he gain support?

We'll find out in New Hampshire.

Google Demotes Chrome in Rankings After Promotion Flap

January 04, 2012, 7:08 PM EST

By Jordan Robertson

Jan. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc. demoted its Chrome browser in Web-search rankings after an advertising effort for the tool ran afoul of its own rules governing paid promotions.

The company is ?taking manual action to demote? Chrome and lower its ranking for at least 60 days, Mountain View, California-based Google said yesterday in an e-mailed statement.

Google?s remarks came in response to blog posts that made favorable remarks about the Chrome browsing tool and said they were sponsored by Google, said Aaron Wall, founder of SEOBook.com, which trains marketers on how to improve search results. Google said it didn?t give a green light to the campaign, which it said stemmed from efforts to buy online ads.

?We have consistently avoided paid sponsorships, including paying bloggers to promote our products, because these kind of promotions are not transparent or in the best interests of users,? Google said. ?We?re now looking at what changes we need to make to ensure that this never happens again.?

Helping users distinguish between authentic endorsements and advertising is central to what search engines do, and Google has punished websites it accuses of manipulating results to present paid content as original thought.

?People were outraged and cursing about it,? Wall said of online discussion that began last week. ?They were saying it was an insane double standard and crazy.?

Essence Digital, an Internet-advertising company that has worked with Google to promote Chrome, posted a statement online to offer ?context on what happened.?

Essence Digital said that Google didn?t authorize a campaign to pay for sponsored blog posts. Google only agreed to buy online video ads, Essence Digital said. The company apologized to Google.

Matt Isaacs, CEO of Essence Digital, declined to elaborate.

2 UK men found guilty of murdering black teen

Lawrence family via PA / AP, fil

Gary Dobson and David Norris were found guilty of the murder of Stephen Lawrence, above, at the Old Bailey in London on Tuesday.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

LONDON - A jury found two men guilty on Tuesday of murdering a black teenager in a brutal assault that shook Britain to its roots nearly 20 years ago.

Gary Dobson, 36, and David Norris, 35, had denied killing Stephen Lawrence, who was attacked by a gang of five youths and stabbed to death in southeast London in 1993.

Prosecutors had claimed that blood, hair and fibers traced to Lawrence were found on Dobson and Norris' clothes, proving their involvement. The defense had claimed the evidence was contaminated.

The jury deliberated for three days at the Old Bailey courthouse before announcing the verdict Tuesday.

The initial charges against three of the five youths in 1993 were dismissed following a mishandling of evidence by police.

Change in criminal law
The case has marked a seminal moment in race relations in the UK and has helped modify recent British criminal law.

Crown Prosecution Service / Reuters

Gary Dobson (left) and David Norris (right) had denied killing Stephen Lawrence in 1993.

Two internal police inquiries acknowledged police were not vigorous in pursuing evidence. And a public inquiry, the McPherson Report (1999), led to recommendations in recognizing race-based hate crimes.

The McPherson Report also went a step further in acknowledging that racism was an institutional feature of London's Metropolitan Police and recommended that race relations legislation should not only apply to the public but also to the police force.

Additionally, Britain's double jeopardy law has been revised to allow a suspect to be tried for a second time over the same crime if new evidence comes to light. With the advances of DNA technology, prosecutors were able to call for a review of evidence against Dobson and Norris this year.

Florida to drug-test welfare recipients - America City & County article

Welfare recipients in Florida will now have to undergo screening for illegal drug use, a law Gov. Rick Scott says will ?increase personal accountability and prevent Florida?s tax dollars from subsidizing drug addiction.? However, the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida (ACLU of Florida) is threatening to sue to block the measure, saying it gives ?ugly legitimacy? to stereotypes of welfare recipients.

Under the law, which takes effect on July 1, the Florida Department of Children and Family Services will be required to conduct the drug tests on adults applying for assistance. The aid recipients would be responsible for the cost of the screening, which they would recoup in their assistance if they qualify, and parents who fail the required drug test may designate another individual to receive the benefits on behalf of the children, according to Scott?s office. ?While there are certainly legitimate needs for public assistance, it is unfair for Florida taxpayers to subsidize drug addiction,? Governor Scott said.

However, ACLU of Florida Executive Director Howard Simon says the new law is a violation of personal privacy that humiliates welfare recipients without any evidence that they abuse drugs. Simon said in a statement that a federal judge in 2003 struck down a similar law in Michigan, ruling that forcing those applying for temporary welfare assistance to submit their bodily fluids for a government search violated their Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable searches. ?Searching the bodily fluids of those in need of assistance is a scientifically, fiscally, and constitutionally unsound policy,? Simon said in the statement. ?Today, that unsound policy is Florida law.?

Also, ACLU of Florida filed suit on May 31 to block Scott?s Executive Order 11-58 requiring drug testing for state employees. That lawsuit was filed on behalf of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Council 79, which represents 50,000 public workers who are now subject to the new drug-testing regime and Richard Flamm, a 17-year state employee and Research Scientist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission located at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg. ?It is an unnecessary and costly invasion of the basic privacy and dignity of all state workers to force us to submit to tests of our bodily fluids with absolutely no just cause,? Flamm said in a statement. ?For those of us who do our job well, it?s an affront to suggest we may be abusing drugs just because we work for the state.?

In addition, Scott signed House Bill 1039, which makes ?bath salts? a Schedule 1 controlled substance, considered in Florida to have no medical value or usage. Poison control centers in Florida have reported 61 calls of ?bath salts? abuse, making Florida the state with the second-highest volume of calls, according to Scott?s office. The hallucinogenic substances are readily available at convenience stores, discount tobacco outlets, gas stations, pawnshops, tattoo parlors, and truck stops, among other locations.

Read the governor?s press release or the ACLU of Florida?s press release about its lawsuit against Florida?s drug testing of state employees.

Kidney Donors Reach Out on Facebook

Facebook is also a place to cry for help, particularly for those who are in need of kidney donors.

Damon Brown from Seattle is only one of fortunate individuals who found a kidney on Facebook. He told his story on a special page he created under the name, "Damon Kidney," AP reports.

Fortunately, Damon's friends and family forwarded his link to everyone they knew - until an acquaintance of his wife responded. ?

The family was surprised over the kind gesture of someone they had known for years, but had not been very close to.

"She said it wasn't really for me. It was for my kids, because they deserve to have a dad around," Brown, 38, told AP.

Damon was on the official transplant list and had started mobile dialysis through Northwest Kidney Centers but as he was seeing his health deteriorate, he and his wife decided it was time to make a public plea for help on Facebook via 'Damon Kidney.'

The page eventually drew over 1400 friends.

Like us on Facebook

Just a few weeks ago, after his transplant was approved and scheduled, Brown posted the good news to his Facebook friends, over 300 of whom responded positively to the good news.

Damon's kidney donor, Jacqueline Ryall, 45,?told AP her mother does not understand why she would give a kidney to someone other than her own brother and sister, and her family is worried about her health going forward.

However, Ryall did her own research and figured it is relatively safe for a woman in good health to donate a kidney.

She said her decision to share a kidney is an act of gratitude for all the good things she has in her life.?

April Paschke, a spokeswoman for the United Network for Organ Sharing, a private non-profit organisation that manages the nation's organ transplant system for the federal government, told AP the agency has been seeing an increase in the number of kidney requests being posted to Facebook and other social media sites.

"It's an extension of the way we communicate. Before we found the internet, people found other ways: through a church bulletin, word of mouth or an advertisement even,'' Ms. Pasche noted.

AP further reports in 2011 alone, a man in Michigan also found a kidney donor through Facebook, and a Florida woman found one through Craigslist, a popular website for posting free advertisements.

An average of 46 kidney transplants take place each day in the United States while another 13 people who have been waiting for a kidney die each day. About 90,000 are on the transplant list right now, AP reports.
